East Nashville Wow House: Edgefield's 141-Year-Old Architectural Wonder
WOW House: Once owned by infamous Metro Mayor Bill Boner and Trinity Broadcasting Network, this Dutch Renaissance home has no equal.
NASHVILLE, TN -- If Dutch Renaissance architecture isn't exciting enough — its florid decorations and telltale gables are a rarity in Nashville and, indeed, the South generally — this Edgefield home overlooking East Park and built in 1876 has some former owners that should make for good dinner party conversation.
Bill Boner bought the house in 1980, just after his second successful Congressional campaign and lived here throughout the rest of his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives and into his, let's say, interesting tenure as Metro's mayor. Boner became the first and, to date, only mayor of Metro Nashville not to be re-elected after details emerged of his relationship with aspiring country singer Traci Peel, to whom he was engaged while still married to his third wife. Nashville blushed collectively in 1990 when Peel told a reporter from The Tennessean that the mayor could, um, be romantic for seven hours at a time. The couple then went on "The Phil Donahue Show" — Boner was still mayor, by the way — in October 1990. Peel sang "Rocky Top" with the mayor accompanying her on harmonica. Boner did not seek re-election in 1991 and sold the home in 1993.
Between 1996 and 1998, the home was owned by the "Trinity Christian Center of Santa Ana, Inc.", the parent company of Christian broadcaster Trinity Broadcasting Network.
