East Nashville Wow House: 'Lookaway,' The Home Of Nashville's First Professional Songwriter?
WOW House: There are plenty of songwriters in East Nashville now, but the first one to hit it big lived here.
NASHVILLE, TN -- Nashville's crawling with songwriters these days (just ask your barista; I kid, I kid), but Beth Slater Whitson may well have been the first to really hit it big.
In 1910, while living in Hickman County, she wrote "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," which became a massive hit and an American standard. She also wrote "Meet Me Tonight In Dreamland," which similarly was a huge success. In 1917, she moved to Nashville with her husband, the adventurer George Whitson, and they lived at the home they called "Lookaway." In recent years, it's been used for neighborhood meetings and it survives despite being surrounded by a new development.
