FRESNO, CA — A former Maplewood High School teacher was arrested in California after she was indicted in Nashville for sexual battery by an authority figure.
The Davidson County grand jury indicted Janai Mercedes Smothers, 25, and the Metro Nashville Police Department's Warrants Division determined she was likely in the Fresno, Calif., area. MNPD notified authorities there and she was located at a Fresno school and arrested Monday afternoon.
The indictment alleges that Smothers had unlawful physical contact at Maplewood with a female student during the 2015-16 school year. The MNPD’s Sex Crimes Unit conducted the investigation that led to the indictment.
