Teen Parolee Arrested With AK-47 After Carjackings: Police

An 18-year-old on parole stole two cars and barged into an apartment in an evasion bid, Metro Police say.

MADISON, TN -- While trying to escape in one stolen car, an 18-year-old carjacked another and then barged into a Madison apartment to hide, all while carrying an AK-47, according to Metro Police.

An officer patrolling the James Cayce Homes called in other officers after spotting what he believed was a stolen car, a Hyundai Genesis reported stolen from West Nashville earlier this week.

Pursuing police, which included a helicopter crew, the SWAT team and members of the Juvenile Crime Task Force, said the driver, Robert Johnson, ignored commands to stop and then sped away, jumping the curb and driving on Ellington Parkway.

Johnson reportedly took the Briarville Road exit and then crashed into a utility pole. Apparently undeterred, he then walked to a nearby gas station, allegedly carjacking a 2013 Ford Fusion while armed with an AK-47.

The helicopter crew followed the Fusion to the Charter Village Apartments on Rio Vista Drive in Madison. Nearly simultaneously, patrolling officers in Madison got a report of a home invasion at the apartment complex, with the suspect matching Johnson's description.

The SWAT team arrived on scene, where Johnson was holed up inside an apartment - the residents had escaped safely - and eventually surrendered.

Johnson is charged with robbery/carjacking, felony evading arrest, two counts of auto burglary, aggravated criminal trespassing and four counts of violating his probation.

Police expect more charges later.
