Fire investigators said the blaze began due to an electrical wiring failure, which ignited combustible materials in the chase between apartments, which is a space in walls for piping and ducts. The fire travelled into the chase and then into the void between the first and second floor and up into the attic.

The apartments were built in 1971 and did not have a sprinkler system, which was not required under the codes in effect at the time. Under current codes, sprinklers will have to be installed if the buildings are re-built
