Four New Traffic Box Wraps To Be Installed Around Johnson City

Crews with the Johnson City Public Works Department will install four new traffic box wraps throughout the city Tuesday (May 19), expanding the Johnson City Public Art Committee’s traffic box wrap program to seven. These artistic wraps add a creative touch to the streetscape and brighten each intersection with a pop of color.

Installation of the new wraps will begin at 9 a.m. at the traffic box located at the intersection of West State of Franklin Road and South Commerce Street (by Founders Park). Other locations include: West State of Franklin Road and West Watauga Avenue, East Main Street and Legion Street, and East Watauga Avenue and Elm Street.

The Johnson City Public Art Committee received a Creative Placemaking Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission to expand the traffic box wrap program in Johnson City. Following a request for proposals for “place-based” wrap designs, four designs were selected from a pool of applicants.

Each design reflects the unique attributes of the areas in which they will be located. For example, the wrap near the Langston Centre highlights Langston High School’s original motto “Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve,” and the wrap near Founders Park depicts images related to Johnson City’s downtown festivals and farmers market.

The designs were printed on durable vinyl wraps that remain in good condition for up to 10 years. Planning for additional traffic box wraps is under way with new phases of the program scheduled for the coming year. Installations will be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.
