Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh said that Sean Ganey shot himself after he shot his wife Cassidy Ganey, her father, Kenny Adair, and step-mother, Shelly Larenz-Adair. Fitzhugh said a child had been in the home Monday as well, but had been taken away by another family member before the shooting.

The sheriff said deputies went to the home last week because Sean Ganey was suicidal. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and that officers and family members removed all weapons they could find from the home at that time.

It is unclear how or when Ganey acquired the gun used Monday, he said.

"The event that lead to this is very tragic," Fitzhugh said. "It's a terrible outcome to a situation we see far too often."
