La Vergne And Smyrna Are Home To 100 Registered Sex Offenders

LA VERGNE, TN — Before kids go trick or treating on Halloween, October is a good time to take stock of who is living nearby. La Vergne and Smyrna have a combined 100 registered sex offenders listed on the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry.

There are 54 registered sex offenders in Smyrna and 46 in La Vergne, but it takes a bit of searching to find those. Because of La Vergne's unusual (and often inconsistent) spelling — officially, the name of the town has a space between the "La" and the "Vergne," but it isn't universally applied — it can be difficult to use the state website to search. The space for searching by city doesn't allow for special characrters, including a space, but only one registered sex offender listed his address without the space. Sheriff's departments and police typically spend the days before Halloween reminding registered sex offenders of the non-contact rules and in the two decades since states began registries, the number of sex crimes against children on Halloween has fallen to virtually zero.
