Rutherford School Building Plan Totals $402 Million

Rapidly-growing Rutherford County will have to spend big on schools to keep up with surging student populations.

MURFREESBORO, TN — Over the next six years, Rutherford County expects to spend more than $400 million on school construction.

At a meeting of the county commission's Health & Education Committee Tuesday night, the school system's assistant superintendent for budget and finance laid out a capital spending plan that carries the county through August 2022.

Among the top priorities for the district — which added 1,036 students this year to reach a total of 43,692 children across 46 schools, using a total of 143 portable classrooms — is opening Rockvale High School by 2019, according to the Daily News Journal. The school on New Salem Highway will draw from Riverdale, Blackman and Stewarts Creek high schools.
