Smyrna Contains La Vergne's Dynamic Duo in 38-20 Win

The Bulldogs' focus on the Wolverines' top wide receivers pays off in the upset.

SMYRNA, TN — Few Midstate high schools can, like La Vergne, boast of having two University of Tennessee commitments at wide receiver and few people would blame the Wolverines' opponents of being a bit intimidated by the duo of Princeton Fant and Maleik Gray.

Friday night, rivals Smyrna used underclassmen to defend the senior pair, largely containing the star wide-outs and giving the Bulldogs a 38-20 win in the season opener for both teams.

Fant had five catches for 87 yards, but Gray was shut-out completely as sophomore cornerback Blake Watkins and junior corner Lennon Harris forced the Wolverines to adjust the game plan. Predictably, the run game opened up for La Vergne, as tailback Keytavies Bradley rushed for 224 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns.
