Smyrna Kmart to Close in December

The North Lowry location is one six stores statewide set to shutter.

SMYRNA, TN — The Kmart at 333 North Lowry Street in Smyrna will close in mid-December, the company announced Monday.

Six stores across Tennessee will be shuttered altogether, Kmart parent Sears Holdings said. The move comes six months after 78 Sears and Kmarts nationwide were closed. Liquidation sales will begin Thursday.

Since the big drawdown in April, Sears Holdings has been examining the profitability of its remaining locations and decided to accelerate closures of its most unprofitable stores. Comparable store sales at Kmart and Sears Domestic declined 3.3 percent and 7 percent, respectively, in the second quarter. Total revenue fell to $5.7 billion from $6.2 billion in the same quarter last year, which actually beat analyst expectations of $5.4 billion.
