Additional Adoption Advice
So, you've decided to take the new pet plunge. Here are a few helpful hints to review in preparation for becoming an owner of a rescued dog or cat.
- Be prepared. Decide ahead of time the method of training you will use and purchase necessary Canine care taking items, like food, a collar, a leash, a kennel and a few toys.
- Make time to bond. It's important to establish a relationship with your new pet once you've brought them home. Regardless of busy schedules, new pets need to be socialized in order to acclimate to new environments.
- Go to the vet. Before you bring a new born baby home from the hospital, they need certain vaccinations and routine procedures that are necessary for their health and survival. New pets are no different - book a check up with your local vet to get basic blood work and shots, as well as heart work and flea/tick medication. Consider having your new pet spayed or neutered.
- Create (and keep) a schedule. Establish set times for walking and feeding your furry friend and try not to deviate. Rescued animals often come from circumstances riddled with abuse and neglect, so consistency is key to their domestication and well being.
- Be flexible. As cute as they may be, new pets can be stressful. During the first few weeks of training, expect a few accidents on the carpet or a scratch or two on a coffee table or hardwood floor. Remember to practice patience and reward their good behavior with love and affection. Avoid unleashing unwarranted aggression on your new pet. Some rescued pets, especially older ones, have developed habits that can be hard to correct. Take a deep breath, do your best and your new pet will follow your lead.
