Nashville Ikea Dead: Report

The Tennessean reports that Swedish discount consumer-durables giant Ikea is cancelling its Nashville plans.

Citing a source familiar with the Swedish retailer’s plans, the newspaper said the company is pivoting to a more online-focused model, resulting in a slowdown of brick-and-mortar projects, including the cancellation of the location in Antioch.

Councilwoman Tanaka Vercher confirrmed the report to WSMV.

Almost a year ago to the day, the company announced with much fanfare it would place a 341,000 square-foot store in the Century Farms development south of Bell Road near Interstate 24 off a new Hickory Hollow interchange.

It was to begin construction in 2019 with a 2020 opening. Tennessee’s first Ikea opened in Memphis last year.
