Nashville Tennessee's Safest Big City: Report

Nashville is Tennessee's 37th safest city, according to a new report, but is safer than Knoxville, Chattanooga and Memphis.

NASHVILLE, TN -- Though Metro Nashville is only Tennessee's 37th safest city overall, according to a newly released report, it is safer than the other three major metros.

Nashville reported 7,371 violent crimes and 24,719 property crimes in 2016, giving it a violent crime rate of 11.02 per 1,000 and property crime rate of 36.97 per 1,000. The overall state rates were 9.45 violent crimes per 1,000 population and 39.33 property crimes per 1,000.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security used the FBI's Uniform Crime Report statistics, giving more weight to violent crimes and then ranking cities with populations over 10,000.

Knoxville was ranked 46th and Chattanooga 47th, both with lower violent crime rates, but with much higher property crime rates than Nashville. Memphis was 51st of the 53 cities ranked.

Brentwood is the state's safest city, followed by Spring Hill.

Athens, in McMinn County, is Tennessee's least safe city according to the study.
