Couple Married Nearly 64 Years Die Less Than A Day Apart

The couple's son told WKRN they shared a hospital room until the end, nearly 64 years to the day since they were married.

WEST NASHVILLE, TN — A Nashville, Tennessee couple married for nearly 64 years died just days apart, their son told WKRN. After six decades together, the two spent their final days just inches apart in a St. Thomas West hospital room.

Son Eddie told the news station that Trent and Dolores Winstead met in Dickson in the 1950s before moving to Grosse Pointe Court in Charlotte Park, where quiet Delores collected cookbooks and Trent spent his days fishing.

Before heading to service in Korea, Trent proposed to Delores in a most unusual place.

“In order to not get a no, I guess, he waits until she’s brushing her teeth to ask her to marry him,” Eddie said, according to Channel 2.

Trent checked into St. Thomas with failing kidneys and Dolores stayed by his side until she came down with a bad headache that turned out to be a brain aneurysm. Just two days later, just weeks before anniversary No. 64, Dolores died and Eddie, tasked with telling his father the news that his partner of more than six decades was gone, told Trent that it was OK if he wanted to be with the love of his life.

“I told him, I said, ‘Dad, if you want to go be with mom, that’s quite alright with Sheryl and I.’,” Eddie told WKRN.

A few hours later, less than a day after his beloved, Trent died, too.

“It’s like God made their travel arrangements and they went together,” daughter Sheryl said. “It’s just really sweet.”
