Texas Kindergartners Find Unexpected White House Pen Pal
Joe Biden became the latest president to join a classroom's Proud Moment corner after penning a letter to El Paso kindergartners.

EL PASO, TX — A classroom of El Paso kindergartners recently added a prominent name to its collection of letters sent from what could be an even more prominent address: the White House.
Shortly after President Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election, the students in Martha Tavarez's kindergarten class at Barron Elementary School wrote to congratulate Biden.
The letter also followed a mock election among Tavarez's students and a lesson on its importance.

"We were learning what voting was and began by voting for fruits, vegetables ... and we took it a step further and voted for the president," Tavarez told "Good Morning America." "I assigned them to ask their folks who they're voting for and who they should vote for and why."
Once the lesson and the real election were over, the class received a response from Biden.

“I received your letter and wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your kind words,” Biden wrote in his letter. He continued by saying he remains “heartened by the spirit and resilience of the American people," ending with, "Thanks again for writing, Martha. For keeping the faith in us and in the country we love, I am forever grateful to you.”
The letter from Biden was promptly placed in the classroom's Proud Moment corner, joining a letter received last summer by Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris. Tavarez wrote to Harris after hearing her speak on the importance of education.
"I don't expect anything in return, but I open my mailbox and it made me happy to know I was heard," Tavarez told "Good Morning America." "I'm just an ordinary, everyday teacher. I want to show my kids how drawing a simple picture can bring a smile to someone's face."
The Biden administration isn't the first to send letters to Tavarez's class.
The Proud Moment corner includes letters penned by Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush and former first lady Melania Trump.
The first letter written by the class was sent to Obama in 2015 following the Charlottesville, Virginia, shooting. Later, Tavarez and her students sent get-well cards to Barbara Bush; however, she died prior to receiving them.
The kindergartners also sent drawings and small notations to convey their messages and well-wishes to the McCain family following Sen. John McCain's death.
“I talk to the kids about the letter and they give me ideas of what to write,” Tavarez said, according to a district news release. “They are just saying that their hearts are with them. The kids need to see the littlest thing can make someone happy.”
