Bellaire Looking To Fill Spots On 2 City Boards

Here's how to serve your city on either the Board of Adjustments or the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board

BELLAIRE, TX — The City of Bellaire is looking for a few good volunteers for their community. The city has opened up applications for both its Board of Adjustments and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017.

The terms for both openings will start after an appointment by the Bellaire City Council and will expire on June 30, 2018. Interested applicants will be interviewed by the city council during in either January or February of 2018.

The Board of Adjustment (BOA) is a seven-member panel responsible for considering applications for variances or special exceptions to the Zoning Code (Chapter 24, Planning and Zoning, of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Bellaire, Texas). The BOA meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. (unless otherwise stated) in the Council Chambers, located on the first floor of City Hall, 7008 South Rice Avenue, Bellaire, Texas 77401.

How it works is that landowners or their agents apply to the city’s building official of the Development Services Department. Formal dockets, which must be legally advertised, are scheduled for the BOA. Meetings are held to hear testimony on the applications. The BOA determines the outcome of all applications, which may only be appealed to a Harris County District Court.

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB) is also a seven-member panel responsible for advising the Parks and Recreation Department in policy matters pertaining to Bellaire parks and recreation, but is responsible to the city council. The PRAB meets monthly on the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Recreation Center, located at 7008 Fifth Street. Meetings are occasionally held at the CenterPoint Energy Community Center, second floor of the Bellaire Family Aquatic Center, located at 7001 Fifth Street.

The PRAB may undertake studies of the park facilities and public recreation programs for their improvement and may make recommendations to the City Council.

To apply for either of these boards, visit the city’s website (www.bellairetx.gov) or contact City Clerk Tracy L. Dutton at tdutton@bellairetx.gov if you prefer to receive a fillable form or hard copy.
