Leander Man Dies In Travis County Sheriff's Office Custody

LEANDER, TX — A Leander man who was in Travis County Sheriff's Office custody died Wednesday, authorities said.
Eddie Vargas, 28, of Leander died Wednesday after he was detained by sheriff's deputies on suspicion of physically assaulting a woman while naked in the street.
Authorities said deputies received a 911 call at 5:19 p.m. for a naked man in the street who was physically assaulting a woman at the 11900 block of Bluebonnet Lane in Austin.

When deputies arrived, they approached Vargas and detained him with handcuffs. About a minute later, Vargas lost consciousness, but was breathing, authorities said.
Austin-Travis County EMS and Austin Fire paramedics started CPR on Vargas after they arrived before taking him to a local hospital. He died at the hospital, officials said.

Travis County deputies later discovered Vargas had been using drugs. An autopsy was conducted on Thursday and the final report is pending toxicology results, the sheriff's office said.
An investigation by TCSO’s Internal Affairs Unit, Criminal Investigations Division (assisted by the Texas Rangers) and the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office is underway, as is customary with any death in custody, authorities said.
