6 Children Burned In Guatemalan Eruption Arrive At Shriners

GALVESTON, TX — Six children who were seriously burned in the Guatemalan volcanic eruption arrived in Galveston early Thursday for treatment at Shriners Hospital

The children, who are between the ages of 12-16 years old, arrived at Scholes Airport via military transport just after 4:30 a.m., and were transported directly to the hospital.

The children were badly injured when Guatemala’s Vulcan de Fuego erupted, spewing ash and molten rock for miles.

Dozens have been killed and hundreds injured since the eruption last weekend.

Meanwhile, the children who not only suffered severe burns, but respiratory injuries from the poisonous and heated ash, and will be treated free while their families are housed nearby, officials said.

According to a KTRK report, the cost of that treatment will exceed $1 million per patient will take years for them to fully recover.
