Abigail's Wish: Cancer Patient Takes Police Officer's Oath

FREEPORT, TX — The Freeport Police Department granted the wish of a young girl suffering from cancer by making her an honorary police officer on Thursday. Abigail Arias, 6, stood tall and proud as she took her oath to be kind to others, in front of a room full of smiling officers, family, and friends.

Arias, who has battled and defeated cancer before, is now battling Wilms tumor. However, this time there’s no cure, her parents said.

It's been a fight that Abigail has fought valiantly for much of her young life, and returned with a vengeance late last year when doctors told her parents there was no hope.

On Feb. 7, Freeport Police Chief Ray Garivey wept as he administered the oath to Abigail and granted her wish to be a police officer.

Wearing a police uniform made just for her, Abgail stood on a chair in front of Garivey inside Freeport City Hall.

Garivey learned about Abigail and her wish to become a police officer when he met her and her family in December, KTRK reported.

The chief reached out to a company called Cop Stop in Pearland, who provided the custom-made uniform to Arias's special day.

“We’re strong in our faith,” Rueben Arias told KHOU. “We believe in God. The doctors can say what they say medically but we know that God is the one that has her destiny in his hands.”
