Forecasters Expect More Heavy Rain This Week

Areas of the Texas Gulf Coast were hit with another wave of heavy rain Wednesday, and more rain is expected this week, forecasters said.

HOUSTON, TX — Residents along the Gulf Coast are expected to experience more flooding this week as the rain continues to pound communities near Galveston Island. Officials in Texas City closed schools on Tuesday when storms rolled inland dumping more than six inches of rain in areas saturated from weekend storms.

Although the rain did let up overnight Tuesday, residents in Texas City, Dickinson, League City, Friendswood, Bacliff, and other coastal communities were hit Wednesday morning with more heavy rain, which overwhelmed drainage systems and caused street flooding.

Officials said many of these areas are still slowly recovering from Hurricane Harvey, which devastated the Texas Gulf Coast last year.

Forecasters said the heavy rain should let up by Wednesday afternoon, but showers will likely return Wednesday night through early Thursday.

Meanwhile, forecasters are keeping an eye on a tropical system that has a 60 percent chance of developing into a tropical storm by the weekend.

Forecaster said if the tropical system does develop, it would likely move quickly through the region.
