Government Closes As Gulf Coast Communities Honor MLK

City and county offices in the bay area will be closed on Monday to honor the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

HOUSTON — City and County offices in the bay area will be closed in observance of the birth of slain civil rights leaders Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In the Houston area, it has been observed in the black community for decades in observance of MLK Jr's birthday.

The observance of the slain civil rights leader’s birthday as a national holiday was signed into law in 1983, but wasn’t officially observed by most states until 1991.

Along with local state and county offices, schools will also be closed on Monday.

  • City of Nassau Bay
  • City of Seabrook
  • Clear Lake Offices
  • City of Pasadena
  • City of Dickinson
  • City of Texas City
  • City of Pearland
  • City of Friendswood
  • City of League City
  • City of Crosby
  • City of Channelview

Mail services will not run with all federal offices closed for the day. Trash collection will vary per community, but most will run as scheduled.
