Third Zika Case Found In Galveston County
Galveston County health officials have confirmed a third case of the Zika virus.

GALVESTON, TX — Health officials have confirmed a third travel related case of the Zika virus in Galveston County. A woman acquired the virus on a recent trip to the Dominican Republic.
The Galveston County Health District does not believe that the virus was transmitted to any local mosquitoes or people.

The latest case comes less than a week after Galveston officials confirmed the second case of travel-related Zika, and 12 days after confirming the first.
The Houston-area has emerged as a hub in the ongoing struggle against the Zika virus. Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch recently determined that the Aedes aegypti mosquito is the only mosquito active in the Houston-area that can transmit the Zika virus.

Another team of UTMB scientists recently determined that 20 currently FDA approved drugs can treat the virus. A for-profit biotech firm in The Woodlands also recently announced that it is working on a vaccine for the virus.
