Dallas Won't Chicken Out: Shortage of Wings Puts Thighs In Motion

Don't tell Dallas chain Wingstop they need to step away from the fryer. As prices of wings soar, they've flipped the bird to fried thighs.

DALLAS, TX —When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. But what about when the price of chicken wings becomes unmanageable?

Well, the Dallas-based chain knows that sometimes when things go South, you need to do the same. They've begun a virtual offshoot called "Thighstop" as an enticement to lure customers into checking out their thighs as opposed to traditional wings, which are currently soaring in price.

Do not try to rationalize how one part of a bird is more expensive than another. Yes, they're all parts of the same formerly alive bird. But white meat is in greater demand, and the chicken sandwich wars raging from McDonalds to Popeyes and elsewhere are causing a crunch.

You can also point to (but don't laugh) at a rise, so to speak, of impotent roosters. The confluence of unfortunate events has seen chicken wing prices vault during the pandemic from 98 cents last year to a whopping $3.22 per pound today.

Other than bringing thighs to the rescue, Wingstop's menu remains largely identical, and chicken fans can still pluck from among 11 options to flavor their respective bird parts. Oh, and boneless does remain an alternative as well.

Wingstop's thigh-high plan is already in full effect at their 1,400 restaurants strewn across the country, as well as through Thighstop.com and DoorDash.
