Granger's challenger, Chris Putnam, has worked in the tech industry and says he will be a true ally to Trump in Washington. According to The New York Times, Putnam is being helped by funding from outside of Texas in his bid to be on the November ballot.

"In a primary race that reflects the internal struggles of the Republican Party under President Trump, Mr. Putnam is attacking Ms. Granger as not conservative enough for Texas’s 12th Congressional District and insufficiently supportive of the president," the Times wrote in a recent story profiling the race.
