3 Dead In NW Austin Apartment Shooting; Suspect Identified

Police have identified Stephen Nicholas Broderick as the suspect in the Arboretum Oaks Apartments shooting that left three people dead.

AUSTIN, TX — A heavy police presence continues at the Arboretum Oaks Apartments apartment complex in northwest Austin Sunday afternoon, as local officials have said three people have died in an attack that was still ongoing after noon.

Officials with the Austin-Travis County EMS said on Twitter paramedics have obtained "deceased on scene pronouncements" for three adults at the complex in the 9600 block of Great Hills Trail.

The identities of the fatal victims in the apartment attack have not been identified. Austin-Travis County EMS later said no other victims were found.

Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41, has been identified as the shooting suspect, Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said in a Sunday afternoon news conference. He had not been found nor charged as of 3 p.m.

Broderick, a former Travis County Sheriff's Office detective, was accused and charged with sexual assault of a child last summer. He's considered "armed and dangerous," Chacon said Sunday.

Austin police said the incident appears to be an "isolated" domestic situation, with "no risk" to the public.

Residents of the area received a "shelter-in-place" alert on their cell phones. The first call was made to police at 11:42 a.m., officials said.

Officials have asked people to avoid the area as the search for the suspect continues.
