AUSTIN, TX — One person has died after being shot early Saturday morning in Austin's Sixth Street area, police said. More than a dozen people were injured in the shooting and at least one person police identified as a suspect in the shooting is in custody.

The shooting victim who died was identified as 25-year-old Douglas John Kantor. According to police, Kantor died early Sunday morning at a local hospital. The Austin-American Statesman reported that Kantor was a tourist visiting the city from New York.

Police are still searching for a second suspect in the shooting and are asking anyone with information to call them at 512-974-TIPS or through CrimeStoppers at 512-472-8477 or through the app.

The gunfire broke out around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Interim Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said investigators believe it began as a dispute between two parties.

"As the incident unfolded it became clear there were many, many victims in this incident," Chacon told reporters at a news conference Saturday.

Police officers rushed shooting victims to nearby hospitals in their own squad cars, transporting six victims overall to the hospital, as the area was so crowded and chaotic that at first ambulances could not get through, police said.

The shooting happened in the heart of Austin's thriving live music and nightlife district.

"Sixth Street on a Friday night is very busy. The streets are barricaded and we have large crowds," Chacon said. "The crowds are on the street and very active."
