80-Year-Old Driver Killed In North Austin Crash Identified
Police said Inez Whitener was struck at an intersection on Aug. 10 before succumbing to her injuries 11 days later.
AUSTIN, TX — Police on Thursday identified the elderly motorist who was killed in a two-car collision earlier this month in the northeast part of the city.
The incident dates to Aug. 10 just after 1:20 p.m. along the 12600 block of Dessau Road. According to a police advisory, 80-year-old Inez Whitener was driving a red, 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage eastbound on Bradbury Lane when she entered the Dessau intersection when she was struck by a white, 2012 Nissan Armada traveling southbound on the same cross streets.
Police said Whitener was transported to Saint David's Round Rock Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries eleven days later. The driver of the Nissan Armada sustained minor injuries. She was cited on scene for no driver's license and failure to maintain financial responsibility.

The incident marked Austin’s 53rd fatal traffic crash of 2020, police said, resulting in 58 fatalities this year. At this time in 2019, police added, there were 48 traffic fatalities.
