Austin-Travis County Prepare For Severe Cold Weather

AUSTIN, TX — The City of Austin and Travis County are preparing for severe and cold weather that is anticipated in the coming days, officials said Friday.

The Austin-Travis County Emergency Operations has been activated to respond to the impending inclement weather, according to an advisory. Moreover, the City of Austin, Travis County, and community partners have activated cold weather shelters for tonight, officials noted.

Moving forward, officials added, cold weather shelters will be operating 24 hours a day for as long as conditions dictate. Individuals sheltering this evening will be offered the opportunity to remain during the day and the upcoming nights, officials added. Those seeking shelter on Saturday also will be able to go to the Central Library at 6 p.m. to be transported to shelters, according to the advisory.

A warming center located at the Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Rd., is scheduled to be opened on Saturday at 10 a.m., officials added. Individuals in the warming centers will be eligible to be transported to shelters in the evening on request," officials added.

"It is critical that the public is weather-aware and monitors the conditions in the community for at least the next seven days," officials wrote. "Please check the National Weather Service and local media for current weather conditions."
