Circuit Of The Americas To Host NASCAR Race In 2021

The Cup Series race to take place locally comes after a major racing schedule revamping, according to officials.

AUSTIN, TX — It's official: The Circuit of the Americas will host a NASCAR Cup Series race as part of a schedule revamping in marking the first such sporting event in the local track's history, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Circuit of the Americas officials confirmed the development via Twitter on Wednesday. The development was previously telegraphed by a website called The Athletic, which reported on the plans Sept. 21, as Patch reported at the time.

The locally staged NASCAR race is the result of a revamped racing schedule that would move the All-Star Race would move to the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth as a concession for the track losing a date, "...which would in turn create an opening on the schedule for a points-paying race at COTA," according to the report, the acronym referencing Circuit of the Americas. Moreover, a date for the All-Star Race would be pushed to the middle of the season from its traditional May date, according to the report.

Considered one of the finest racetracks in the U.S., Circuit of the Americas is a state-of-the art, 3.426-mile road course that has hosted eight Formula One Grand Prix since 2012 and other high-profile races. Despite its record, Circuit of the Americas has failed to secure a NASCAR stock car series competitions. Observers believe the reason for this is the proximity of Texas Motor Speedway in North Texas.
