Texas Has 9th Slowest Recovery For Weekly Unemployment Claims

To achieve its rankings, WalletHub researchers ​compared the 50 states and District of Columbia across three key metrics.

AUSTIN, TX — A new report shows Texas has the nation's ninth-slowest recovery for weekly unemployment claims amid an ongoing reach of the coronavirus.

To achieve its rankings, researchers at the personal finance site WalletHub compared the 50 states and District of Columbia across three metrics based on changes in unemployment claims. All told, new unemployment claims remained unchanged week-over-week on Aug. 31, and were 87 percent below the peak during the COVID-19 pandemic as the U.S. fights to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

Once compiled, statistics were included in the WalletHub study ranking States Whose Weekly Unemployment Claims Are Recovering the Quickest. Among the Texas highlights (1=Quickest Recovery, 25=Average):

  • 476.78 percent Change in Unemployment Claims (Latest Week vs Last Year)
    • 66,330 the week of August 31, 2020 vs 11,500 the week of Sept. 2, 2019
    • 12th slowest recovery in the U.S.
  • 436.35 percent Change in Unemployment Claims (Latest Week vs Start of 2020)
    • 66,330 the week of August 31, 2020 vs 12,367 the week of Jan. 1
    • 5th slowest recovery in the U.S.
  • 1,034.47 percent Change in Unemployment Claims (Since Start of COVID-19 Crisis vs Last Year)
    • 3,419,261 between the week of March 16 and the week of Aug. 31 versus 330,534 between the week of March 18, 2019 and the week of Sept. 2, 2019
    • 23rd quickest recovery in the U.S.
