UT Austin Campus Still Under Boil Water Notice

The university will remain closed through at least Wednesday morning.

AUSTIN, TX — Austin Water on Monday lifted its boil water notice for residents in its central service district, including the University of Texas at Austin area, but university authorities said on-campus residents should continue boiling water until further notice.

The university said it will make an announcement when the water is safe to drink.

In the meantime, the university is offering bottled water to students with identification. Students can obtain two bottles of water at the Texas Union until 8 p.m. and Gregory Gym until midnight.

The university said it will remain closed through at least 8 a.m. on Wednesday as crews work to restore the campus and its infrastructure.

"Like many of your residences, our campus facilities have been affected by the weather, and they are unlikely to be ready immediately for full operations after the thaw," University President Jay Hartzell said in a letter to students. "Staff members are working hard to prepare the campus for COVID-era, low-density occupancy, but there is huge uncertainty over how much work must be done; we know it is considerable."

Hartzell said on-site coronavirus testing, vaccinations and limited extracurricular activities are expected to return soon, but in-person classes will take more time. Professors can offer online lectures, discussions and office hours but should not make assignments until Wednesday.

The cancellation of classes will not impact spring break, Hartzell said, nor will the semester be lengthened.

"As for the rest of the week, we need to prepare for a time of transition," the letter reads. "Students will be coming back from serious adversity, and faculty members should consider delaying due dates for major exams or assignments this coming week."

As it stands, on-campus residents have a stable supply of water, and all residents have access to usable restrooms. Portable restrooms are being delivered to buildings without working restroom facilities, Hartzell said. More information about warming and water stations can be found on the university's emergency website.

Students and staff who find water leaks or facility-related issues on campus are asked to report them by calling 512-471-2020 or visiting the facilities service center.

"Our staff and faculty members are dedicated to the health and well-being of our students, and I am thankful for every one of you doing the work behind the scenes, delivering for our community," Hartzell said.
