AUSTIN, TX — From Tony Cantu, Austin Editor, Patch.com: SXSW officials understand deadline pressure. During Patch’s coverage of the massive music and arts festival that wrapped up its two-week run in Austin this past weekend, SXSW organizers urged members of the media to grab adult coloring books they supplied (along with instant soups, energy bars, coffee and tea) in order to relieve stress brought on by the rigors of deadline pressure.

Yet despite myself, I tried the coloring. And you know what? It worked! There’s a Zen-like thing that occurs when one is back home trying to de-stress by coloring like a child. After a while, my journalistic instincts kicked in again, however, and I put the book aside. For stress is part of the deal with us hardened journalists, don’t you know. I’ve learned to embrace the nervous energy that comes with unforgiving deadline demands, channeling it to form the muscular prose and natural transition from paragraph to paragraph that is my hallmark.
But I’d like some of my readers to have the unused books. Don’t put too much currency in my reactive move to put them aside as they are a lovely, child-like way to pass the time.
