Austin-Travis County EMS said the man was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center on Monday with serious, potentially life-threatening smoke inhalation injuries. His condition was unknown Wednesday.
"We salute our brothers in blue from @Austin_Police - Officers Chandler Carrera and Eddie Pineda- who bravely risked their own lives at this car fire yesterday just before we arrived, smashing the window and dragging the man to safety," Austin Fire Department tweeted Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Chief Joseph Chacon said he was proud of the two officers brave and selfless act.
"Despite the danger, they rushed in and saved a man's life," Chacon said. "...These are the guardians of our community. Thank you, officers Pineda and Carrera!"
Austin police recognized the two officers on Wednesday in a news conference by highlighting their heroic efforts and "good work."
Pineda, who has been with the department for about 5 years, said it felt good to see and hear the positive feedback from the community on their rescue efforts Monday.
"It feels good, but we don't consider ourselves heroes," Pineda said. "We are police officers and that's our job to help and serve our community. I'm just happy that it brought a positive light to the community."
Carrera, who has been with the department less than 2 years, said both he and Pineda immediately responded to help the man in need and didn't have time to hesitate while the truck was engulfed in smoke and flames.
"It's weird to get recognized for something we would do everyday," Carrera said. "Every officer in our department does this on a daily basis, for us, it just happened to get caught on camera."
