Austin Community College To Celebrate Black History Month

Throughout the month, campus will stage events in observance of black history month with a theme revolving around black migration.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — A number of student-led organizations at Austin Community College are scheduled to present weekly events for Black History Month this month, officials said.

The celebrations will center around the theme of black migration, taking place at the African-American Cultural Center on the Eastview Campus from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on each Wednesday this month:

  • Feb. 6: Kickoff Brunch featuring Chas Moore, Co-Founder of Austin Justice Coalition; Fatima Mann, Director and Founder of Community Advocacy and Healing Project; Kazique J. Prince, Senior Policy Advisor & Education Coordinator at City of Austin for Mayor Steve Adler; and Jared Breckenridge, NAACP NextGen Leader & Commissioner for the Student College Commission).
  • Feb. 13: (Musical Showcase featuring Austin singers, spoken-word poets, and more.
  • Feb. 20: Black History Month Trivia Bowl.
  • Feb. 27: Black-Owned Business Bazaar.

"Austin Community College’s student-led organizations are proud to bring Black History Month events to life at Eastview Campus for the first time!" ACC student Grant Loveless said. "These Black History Month events will create a culturally immersive atmosphere for all students to witness what black history is and its importance to Austin Community College students."

ACC’s Black Student Success Committee are leading these events and assisting these student-led organizations in creating Afro-centric events focused on black migration. The theme emphasizes the movement of people of African descent to new destinations and subsequently to new social realities, officials noted.

"While inclusive of earlier centuries, this theme focuses especially on the 20th century through today," campus officials wrote. "The student-led organizations collaborating with the Black Student Success Committee are Black Minds Empowered, Austin Community Corps of Engineers, SWAP (Students With A Purpose) and ACC’s Student Government Association."
