Breaking Barriers Latinx Youth Conference Coming To Austin

Participants will collaborate with artists, activists to facilitate exploration and self-expression centered on 'breaking barriers.'

AUSTIN, TEXAS — The Breaking Barriers Latinx Youth Conference — a day of art, music, and community dedicated to youth — is coming up in early February.

Presented by youth of the Mexican American Cultural Center's Caminos Teen Leadership program on Feb. 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., teenage participants will collaborate with emerging artists and cultural activists to facilitate exploration and self-expression centered on the theme of “breaking barriers.”

"The purpose of the conference is to create a safe space for teens to share their thoughts and express their feelings in a teen-centered environment," city officials wrote on the parks municipal website. "This event is uniquely created BY teens, for teens. The day’s activities are run by teens from the Caminos program."

To that end, the theme will be framed with questions that include:

  • What barriers do we as Latinx youth face?
  • How do we break those barriers?
  • How can we build resilience and empower our youth?
  • How do we encourage each other to share our voices?
  • What can we offer each other to help us succeed at our personal, professional, and artistic goals?

Conference activities will include screen printing, an open mic stage, self-published zines, mural painting, mosaic art, and teen-facilitated discussions. There will be food trucks and exhibitor tables on-site and a live music performance by the Tiarra Girls at 5 p.m.
