Honest-To-Goodness New York-Style Eatery Comes To East Austin
New spot taking over the old Al Fico space on 1700 East 2nd St. with authentic NYC fare. One word: Patrami. Hey, I'm walkin here!

EAST AUSTIN, TX — Up until now, if you wanted a New York-style pastrami sandwich in East Austin you had to resign yourself to disappointment while plaintively muttering "fuggedaboutit."
Not anymore.
Eater Austin reports that a new restaurant is taking over the old Al Fico space on 1700 East 2nd St. — the casual New York-styled tavern Gotham is opening tomorrow, Thursday, July 12, from the co-owners of Cafe Malta. Initially, the East Cesar Chavez neighborhood restaurant will open for dinner only at first, the food blog reports, but after that the staff is gonna take it to the mattresses, speaking in culinary terms.

Gotham’s menu is replete with classic dishes — from the aforementioned house-made pastrami, oysters on the half shell with a Bloody Mary mix, cold-smoked salmon, and burgers. The new restaurant's operators inherited Al Fico’s wood-burning pizza oven, which can only mean one thing: Neapolitan pies with toppings like the again-mentioned pastrami, clams, and prosciutto. Desserts will include cheesecake, naturally, and mocha tarts, Eater Austin adds in its mouth-watering report.
The New York melting pot theme extends to the eatery's beverages, which include Brooklyn Lager draft and cans of cans of Boddington’s Pub Ale and Guinness Stout.
