Honor Flight Austin Flies 40 Vets To Washington, D.C.

Austin-area World War II, Korean and Vietnam War veterans to nation's capital to visit and experience memorials built in their honor..

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Honor Flight Austin’s second flight for fall 2018 departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport for a special flight to Washington D.C. on Friday.

The flight transported 40 Austin-area World War II, Korean and Vietnam War veterans to the nation’s capital to visit and experience the memorials built in their honor. The flight is dedicated as the Hays County Community Flight, honoring veterans from Hays County, airport officials said in a press advisory.

The veterans arrived in the ticketing area at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport at around 10 a.m. The veterans, guardians, and staff assembled for a procession, from Gate 5 to Gate 12 around 11 a.m. The TSA Honor Guard and Austin Police Department Bag Pipes lead the procession.Honor Flight Austin departed Austin-Bergstrom at 12:30 p.m., and will be arriving at Ronald Reagan National Airport at 4:40 p.m.

The veterans are scheduled to return Saturday, Sept. 29, departing from Reagan at 4 p.m. and arriving in Austin at 6:30 p.m., all times local.Join Honor Flight Austin for a welcome home greeting at about 6:30 p.m. upstairs in west ticketing. The veterans are scheduled to arrive at 6:45 p.m.Southwest Airlines operates the flight. The Hilton Austin Airport is a corporate sponsor of Honor Flight Austin. Lunch and refreshments will be provided to veterans courtesy of ThunderCloud Subs.

Trips on Honor Flight are made possible at no cost to the veterans through donations.Honor Flight Austin is a non-profit organization created to honor veterans by transporting them to visit and reflect at their war memorials. Honor Flight Austin serves veterans residing within Bastrop, Bell, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Fayette, Gillespie, Gonzales, Hays, Lee, Llano, Milam, Travis and Williamson Counties.
