'La Mujer' Mural Honoring Women To Be Unveiled In Austin

Large-scale mosaic mural created by teens pays tribute to Latina woman, and will be made part of museum;s permanent outdoor collection.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — A mural titled "La Mujer" (The Woman) is set to be unveiled at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center next month.

The large-scale mosaic mural created by teens in the Caminos program is set to be unveiled on April 13 during the annual La Mujer Festival. The piece honors Latina woman while serving as a powerful reminder of the arts' transfomative power in bringing youth and community together through creativity, museum officials said.

Background

For a 6-month period, 12 Caminos students, Caminos mentors, and lead artist J Muzacz worked to complete “La Mujer”. The joyful, colorful, and relevant piece honors all women that visit ESB-MACC.
Caminos is an immersive; one-year paid internship empowering Austin-area teens to carve their own path in the creative arts. Students work alongside ESB-MACC professionals on a variety of community oriented activities.

TheCaminos students meet on Saturdays at the ESB-MACC and represent a diverse spectrum of schools and geographic areas of Austin. These high schoolers learn about Latin American and Indigenous cultures in the Americas and serve other teens by creating content and events that are relevant and enriching. In so doing, they become Ambassadors of Latinx culture in Austin while receiving precious professional development and empowerment along the way.
