Meeting On Metz-Sanchez-Zavala Modernization Project Is Tonight
At the center of Austin ISD bonds-driven project would be construction of new $25M campus that would replace on of three existing schools.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — Austin ISD officials have scheduled a meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss a potential campus closures amid plans to spend $25 million building a bolstered elementary school in East Austin.
The public meeting on the so-called Metz-Sanchez-Zavala Modernization Project is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7:30 pm. Tuesday, April 17, at Martin Middle School, 1601 Haskell St.
Driven by the district's 2017 bond issuance, the project focusing on East Austin campuses has as its centerpiece the construction of a single, modernized elementary school that would be built at one of three sites where existing campuses currently operate — Metz Elementary School at 84 Robert Martinez Jr St.; , Sanchez Elementary School, 73 San Marcos St.; or Zavala Elementary School, 310 Robert Martinez Jr St.

Work on the project has been ongoing by members of a community planning team since November of last year.
Parents with children attending those East Austin campuses will be able to learn more about the project at Tuesday's meeting as well as the vagaries of the bond. Officials are expected to be on hand to answer questions, and there will be an opportunity for public comment at the end of the formal presentations.

Dinner, child care and Spanish simultaneous interpretation reportedly will be provided to attendees, officials previously said. Patch reached out to Austin ISD communications personnel for more details on the meeting, but messages were not returned.
In an advisory alerting to a previous meeting on the topic, district officials outlined conditions potential speakers must meet:
- 10 minutes total time allotted.
- Two minutes per speaker.
- Speakers must have read the Citizens Communications & Visitor Guidelines.
