Police ID Elderly Woman Who Died In Del Valle Traffic Crash

Elvira Cadena Trujillo, 77, was attempting to turn onto FM 973 April 18 when another car struck her, leading to her death at the hospital.

DEL VALLE, TX — Police on Tuesday identified the elderly woman who died after her car was struck by another vehicle after the other driver ran a red light in Del Valle last week.

The traffic collision occurred along the 4800 block of South FM 973, west of SH 130, on April 18, at around 10:15 a.m. A preliminary police investigation shows that a 2005 white Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling northbound on FM 973 near the intersection of Pearce Lane when the driver ran a red light and struck the driver's side of a 2001 white Hyundai Elantra turning left onto FM 973.

The driver of the Hyundai, Elvira Cadena Trujillo, 77, was transported to South Austin Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries a short time later. Police didn't specify if the driver who hit the woman was impaired or whether any charges will be filed as a result of the woman's death.

The incident marked Austin’s 21st fatal traffic crash of 2019, resulting in 22 fatalities this year. At this time in 2018, police added, there were 19 fatal traffic crashes and 20 traffic fatalities.
