Police Respond To Barricaded Man In East Austin

SWAT team, helicopter dispatched to 1200 block of Cometa Street as a man threatened to harm himself after arguing with his parents.

EAST AUSTIN, TEXAS — Police SWAT members were in East Austin on Tuesday evening in response to a person barricaded inside a dwelling.

Police said on Twitter an emergency call came in alerting to the incident at just past 5:30 p.m. along the 1200 block of Cometa Street. As police tried to coax the person to surrender, Givens Park and nearby streets were closed off. A police helicopter flew overhead as part of the police arsenal dispatched to the site.

About and hour-and-a-half later, the person was placed in police custody. However, surrounding roads remained closed to traffic access pending the outcome of the police investigation, officials said.

William Costello, a senior police officer, told reporters after the incident the incident was sparked after a man argued with his parents while threatening to harm himself. Ultimately, the man surrendered peacefully to bring the standoff to the end. Police later learned the man has outstanding warrants unrelated to the incident.

As the evening progressed in the aftermath of the incident, residents were being let back into their homes and roads were re-opened piecemeal.
