Police To Tell Students Of Crucial Role Black Officers Played In Protecting City
The event at Oak Springs Elementary School is timed to celebrate Black History Month.

EAST AUSTIN, TX -- Austin Police Department officials will celebrate Black History Month in a resonant manner this Friday at Oak Springs Elementary School.
APD representatives will offer a presentation to students gathered in the gymnasium about African American police officers who have served Austin. APD detective Tonya Jefferson will offer tales of a true trailblazer, telling students the story of retired Assistant Chief Cathy Ellison -- the first female AFrican American officer hired by the APD in 1979.
Austin Police Association President Ken “Box” Casaday will convey the story of Austin police officer John Gaines, killed in the line of duty at the young age of 50 in 1913. Many Austinites know the officer’s story through a memorial installed in his honor at 401 E. 6th St.

Others planning to attend include Texas Peace Officers Association President Chandra Ervin and Austin Police Command staff.
The event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. at the school located at 3601 Webberville Rd.
