EPCC Math Professor Dr. Fan Chen was one of eight El Paso area educators recognized for her accomplishments at the 2021 Success Through Technology Educational foundation (STTE) Foundation/CREEED Teacher Awards. Thanks to a partnership with KVIA-TV, this year's Teacher Awards were presented during a broadcasted awards show. “I am honored to win this award. When I moved to El Paso from China, I noticed people's perceptions of math were often negative," Professor Chen said. “I strive every day to change my students' perceptions and to get them excited and inspired about math. "In partnership with KVIA-TV this year's Teacher Awards were televised instead of in-person due to the pandemic. “It is only fitting that we honor these amazing teachers - for their efforts to not only teach the curriculum, but also ensure each student feels supported to succeed in any environment." said Joseph Sapien, executive director of the STTE Foundation. Chen received the Texas Gas Service Education Leadership Award for dedication she demonstrated to students and families throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. By developing creative solutions to ensure students continued to learn and grow, even in virtual learning environments, Chen made a dramatic impact on student success. She is committed to encouraging students to pursue careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics (STEAM) fields by providing innovative approaches to curriculum, afterschool programming, and access to various means of professional development to students in the El Paso region.
