Enchilada Queen’s Cookbook Named Finalist In Latino Book Awards

Publishers Weekly calls Sylvia Casares' 'The Enchilada Queen Cookbook" the "only Tex-Mex cookbook you'll need."

From Sylvia Casares: Sylvia Casares, owner/chef of Houston’s Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen, has been named a finalist in the 2017 International Latino Book Awards for her 2016 “The Enchilada Queen Cookbook.” The awards will be presented in Los Angeles Sept. 9.

The International Latino Book Awards, produced by Latino Literacy Now, began 19 years ago and are awarded annually. This year, there are 233 finalists in 91 categories, including fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks and children’s books. Books are in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Finalists are from across the United States and Puerto Rico as well as 20 countries outside the United States.

“The Enchilada Queen Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Griffin, $27.98) is a beautifully illustrated, hardback book in which Sylvia shares 80 recipes for enchiladas, fajitas, breakfast dishes and classic side dishes based on the ones that madres and abuelas have passed down from one generation to the next in the border towns along the Rio Grande. It even includes a helpful list of resources for finding ingredients like Mexican spices and dried chilies if they’re not readily available.

Written with Dallas food writer Dotty Griffith, Sylvia’s book shares the secrets, flavor-changing tricks, shortcuts and techniques for making the unbelievably delicious Tex-Mex dishes that make her Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen restaurants one of the “Top 10 Great Mexican Restaurants” in the United States (USA Today). Providing recipes from drinks to desserts and everything in between, “The Enchilada Queen Cookbook” is, as Publishers Weekly wrote, “…the only Tex-Mex cookbook you’ll ever need.”

The book is available in bookstores nationwide, on line and in both Sylvia Enchilada Kitchen locations in Houston: 6401 Woodway Dr., 713-334-7295; 1140 Eldridge Pkwy, 832-230-3842. Visit www.sylviasenchiladas.com
