Lamar High School Principal: Uniforms Required, If You Have One

In a letter to students of Lamar High School and their parents, Principal McSwain laid out some necessary information.

HOUSTON, TX — Students of Lamar High School who have school uniforms will be required to wear them on the first day of school on Monday, Sept. 11, according to a letter from the principal, even though the policy was relaxed.

Principal McSwain's focus in the letter was on how students and their families can get help, and how they should help each other out. "Please be patient and kind," he said in the first bullet point of the letter. "Everyone has experienced trauma and stress. everyone. We all need one another to be as caring, understanding, and as helpful as possible."

McSwain noted the difficulty of navigating the city in the wake of Harvey, saying there is no student drop off point on Westheimer. Student drop off is in the West parking lot at the circle drive.

A release from the Houston ISD said the uniform policy will be relaxed until January 2018, but with so many students having lost all of their clothes, it's understandable that uniforms will be required— they're available for free. Students who lost their uniforms can get them for free at one of various sites around the city Friday and Saturday.

"If you do not have a uniform to wear on Monday, please wear something as similar as you have. When you get to school, we will assist you in getting them," McSwain said.

The school is also providing help for students who lost books or electronics to Harvey. Damaged laptops will be replaced. If your laptop was lost in the flood, parents can sign a statement that they were destroyed in the storm and they'll be replaced.

"We will do all that we can and then try to connect you with resources for those things beyond our ability," the letter ended.
