15-Foot Sinkhole Closes Road In Houston Heights

A sinkhole opened up Tuesday in the Heights on Rutland Street near the 16th Street intersection. A temporary fix has been installed for now.

HOUSTON, TX — A sinkhole began opening on Rutland Street near 16th Street in the Heights on Tuesday, and the road had to be closed down near the intersection for safety reasons. Houston Public Works estimated the hole to be about 15 feet deep, but dry.

A report on KHOU said the street was underwater during Hurricane Harvey, but not to the point where the homes flooded.

Until contractors can come shore up the damage permanently, a metal plate has been placed over the hole for a temporary fix.
