Academy Sports + Outdoors Stands Firm On Gun Selling Regulation

HOUSTON, TX — Dick's Sporting Goods made national headlines Wednesday when it announced harsher regulations regarding its gun sale. Wal-Mart followed suit while Houston-based Academy Sports + Outdoor remained silent.

Dick's announced it would a.) stop selling assault-style weapons like the one used in the Parkland, Florida; b.) no longer sell firearms to anyone under the age of 21; and c.) stop the sale of high capacity magazines.

Wal-Mart announced Wednesday it would raise the age limit of purchasing a gun to 21.

Dick's has just five locations in the Greater Houston area while there are about 30 Academy stores locally.

Here's the statement released by Academy Wednesday evening:

"We serve a broad base of customers, and outdoor sports, including hunting and shooting sports, are an important tradition and recreational activity for many of our customers and their families. We are strongly committed to ensuring the legal, safe and responsible transfer of firearms. We follow all applicable regulations relating to the sale of firearms and regularly review our internal policies and processes to ensure our legal and responsible sale of firearms and encourage safe usage and ownership. As a Federal Firearms Licensee, we support the Fix NICS Bill to strengthen the background check system and require greater compliance with the law."

Dick's acknowledged that it sold a shotgun in November to accused Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz, but not an assault rifle like what was used in the shooting.

"It was not the gun, nor type of gun, he used in the shooting," Stack said. "But it could have been."
