Discarded Cigarette Causes Small House Fire In The Heights

HFD responded to a fire at a home on W. 8th Street in The Heights on Wednesday, saving more than $750,000 in property damage.

HOUSTON, TX — A house fire in The Heights was unintentionally started by a discarded cigarette Wednesday, according to a report from the Houston Fire Department.

According to HFD, firefighters found light smoke coming from a one-story detached garage on the 600 block of W. 8th Street at 3:03 p.m. Wednesday. A small fire appeared to have started outside the wall of the garage and extended up an interior stud with sheet-rock. Firefighters from Station 6 extinguished the fire and checked for extension.

Though the fire cause about $3,000 in damage, firefighters were able to save an estimated $782,000 in property damage.
