Heights H-E-B Breaking Ground Tuesday

Thanks to voters approving the removal of dry-zone prohibition on certain sales of alcohol, the Heights will get a new H-E-B

HOUSTON, TX — The large Texas grocer H-E-B will break ground on a 92,000-square-foot store at 2300 N. Shepherd Drive in The Heights on Tuesday. This follows a chain of events that started with local voters approving the the removal of dry-zone prohibition of certain alcohol sales, notably beer and wine. That got the wheels moving forward to The Heights getting Texas' most popular grocery store chain in the neighborhood.

According to a press release, construction on the new store will begin next month with a grand opening in the fall of 2018. Similar to the H-E-B under construction in Bellaire, the one in The Heights will be a multilevel location. Fencing went up around the store's future location, according to Swamplot.com.

Scott McClelland, president of H-E-B's Houston division, told the Houston Business Journal the store wouldn’t have been economically advantageous if it couldn't sell beer and wine, which are two of the top sellers.

H-E-B has more than 300 stores in Texas and Mexico and produces sales of more than $23 billion, per a press release. H-E-B is also Houston’s largest for-profit private employer with 24,437 employees, as of June.

The Bellaire reconstruction and Heights groundbreaking comes on the heels of the store announcing it would close its Meyerland location that sustained too much damage from Hurricane Harvey.
